Standing With Our Families in Puerto Rico: Trusted Ways to Help During the Water Crisis

Our families and communities in Puerto Rico are facing a serious water crisis, and the uncertainty that comes with not knowing when reliable access to clean water will return. For those of us in the diaspora, it is heartbreaking to watch our relatives suffer from far away, not knowing how to help. With that in mind, we have identified four organizations that we believe are worthy of consideration based on their legitimate established work, transparency, strong nonprofit credentials, and demonstrated commitment to Puerto Rican communities. These organizations do different kinds of work. Some focus on immediate emergency water relief, while others work on long-term water security, community resilience, and healthcare.

1. Plenitud PR : Building Water Security from Within 

Plenitud PR is a Puerto Rico-based nonprofit whose work is especially relevant to the current water crisis because water security is one of their core programs. The organization installs rainwater harvesting and filtration systems in family homes and community spaces, while also providing education about water management to develop sustainable sources of water that can help them remain resilient during droughts, hurricanes, and interruptions in public water services. Most importantly, Plenitud is working with partners on quick-response initiatives to provide relief during the current water crisis. This is an organization we particularly recommend for people who want to support both immediate community needs and long-term water independence and resilience in Puerto Rico.

#2. Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico : Putting Resources Into Communities

Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico (FCPR) has been working to strengthen Puerto Rican communities for decades. FCPR provides grants, scholarships, training, technical assistance, capacity building, and other forms of support to nonprofit and community organizations throughout Puerto Rico across areas including water, housing, health, education, energy, and economic development. Water is specifically one of their strategic areas of work. Its programs include efforts to improve access to potable water, strengthen community aqueducts, and increase the ability of communities to manage their own resources. For those of us who want our donations to help strengthen the capacity of our communities on the island by people working directly in those communities, FCPR is an especially strong option.

#3. Convoy of Hope : Immediate Water Relief for Families

Convoy of Hope is an established humanitarian organization that provides disaster relief and emergency assistance, who are actively responding to Puerto Rico's current water crisis. The organization is currently shipping bottled water from its regional distribution center in Atlanta to Puerto Rico to help alleviate the immediate burden on families affected by the crisis. This makes Convoy of Hope a particularly relevant option for people who want to support immediate emergency water relief.

#4. Direct Relief : Supporting Health and Community Infrastructure 

Direct Relief is a humanitarian organization focused primarily on healthcare and medical assistance. While Direct Relief is different from an organization whose primary mission is distributing bottled water, we included it because of its extensive, ongoing work with Puerto Rican healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, and communities. Its current Puerto Rico tracker shows more than $102 million in medical aid delivered in Puerto Rico during 2026, including medicines and medical supplies. For people who want to support the health and humanitarian needs of families affected by the crisis, particularly vulnerable people who may have medical needs, Direct Relief is a strong option.
